Spring Festival of Colours/Colors Holi and Sanatan Dharma Hindu Spirituality


Festival of Colours/colors Holi is celebrated all over the India along with rest of the world. This festival may be the second highest most awaited festivals in India and aboard for the followers of Sanatan Dharma Hindu. However Holi is not only a festival but also a part of our religious faith in God and our traditional customs. This colourful festival connects the people of different castes, communities, faiths, gender and age groups as people hugs each others and convey brotherhood messages among them. The Holi shows the ending edge of the painful winter and gloom rejoices for upcoming spring in nature.

Hindu Historical and Mythological Respect:

According to the Hindu mythology, Hiranyakashyap the king was the king and his son was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap offered his own son Prahalad to become the owner of the Universe but every time Prahalad was saved by the God. Hiranyakashyap tried to kill his son several times but failed and finally thought of a master plan and called his sister Holika. According to the Puran, was blessed by gods in a way that she was immune to fire and she held Prahalad on her lap and sat on middle of fire. More interestingly Holika was burned as her eternal power was gone and Prahalad was un harmed by grace of Lord Vishnu. Finally Hiranyakashyap was killed by the Narsingh avatar (half human and half Lion) of the Lord Vishnu.

Holi Celebration in India:

Thus the way, Holi has come form the word Holika. Holi is considered the colours of our mind which will fill the atmosphere as people throw abeer and gulal from beginning day to ending day as it is airing and showing great joy and mirth in the arrival of this Spring Festival to our lives. The Holi knows no bars of caste, community or religion, everybody feels joy and it is their right to enjoy and enjoy they do for their tradition and culture. Normally, various MELAs are held on this occasion and Songs, dance, drinks, foods everything goes in excess with viral motive.

Holi Celebration

Holi celebration is taken place by the washable natural plant-derived colours such as the turmeric, the neem, the dhak, the kumkum and a few more. But modern days, there are large number of water based commercial pigments were used in Holi celebration. Normally this Holi celebrated for 3 days but Braj region around Mathura (birth place of Sri Krishna) are being celebrated for 7 days in north India.  The traditional methods go beyond playing with colours, and including a day when men and women play a shield to beat them with a stick on each hand. Some places (especially joint family) celebrate the Holi with all members by giving colours to each others and some time it goes with mud too. In the evening, they bring sweets to all and eat them on Plain Streets.

It is said that the use of heavy metal-based commercial pigments during the Holi, may be cause of skin diseases and water pollution cased in the name of tradition. Another allegation is reported the celebration of Holi is the traditional Holika bonfire for common people. As it is believed to contribute to deforestation among common people which may be cause of dissertation in near future.
